PHOTO WALK THE MORTELLES
If you draw lines on a map between Eindhoven, Tilburg and 's-Hertogenbosch you have the triangle we call Het Groene Woud. A gigantic area of about 7500 hectares! In the middle of this region you can find the nature reserve De Mortelen. Actually, the name of the region already gives away a lot, namely that it is an enchanting green forest. In recent years, it has become especially famous for the red deer that have been living here since 2017.
The literal translation of Mortel is soft ground. That what makes this nature reserve unique. What is typical of this area is the rich flora and fauna. In spring it is a paradise of flowers. The slender primrose, wood anemones, pinky flowers, red deer, amphibians and the tree frog, you will find them all among the stately forest avenues in De Mortelen. We can already hear your photography heart beating faster and we understand that. A walk in De Mortelen is like a walk through a fairytale forest.
DID YOU KNOW
Since 2017, red deer have been living in De Mortelen and the Scheeken. Did you know that through behavior and grazing habits the red deer create more life in the landscape? They make more space for lots of plants and animals. From mid-September to mid-October is the rutting season. This is the period when the male deer try to impress the hinds (females). In De Mortelen you can then hear from afar the sound they make, belling, and there is a good chance you will see two males fighting. However, our photo walk is not during this period. Photographing and spotting these imposing animals during the rutting season is an increasingly popular subject so we refrain from seeking out the large crowds because we don't want to disturb the animals. By the way, there is still a very good chance that we will still run into them during the hike, but without the belling sound. So make sure you have your camera ready.
