PHOTO WALK KALMTHOUTSE HEIDE
The official name of this nature reserve says it all: Border Park Kalmthoutse Heide lies on both sides of the Belgian-Dutch border. With over 60 square km this is a huge area and and like most nature reserves this landscape is also filled with heathland, fens, dunes, forests and much more beauty. We literally cross the border during this photo walk and come to both the NL and BE part.
We visit the area during the time when the heather is also in bloom. Because of the damp landscape, there is a fairly good chance that there is a mist hanging overhead. Heather and fog, that sounds heavenly. Even without fog it is very beautiful. Flying a drone is unfortunately not allowed but there is a high observation tower as high as 42 meters where you have a beautiful view over much of the park. Put on your hiking boots, grab your camera gear and come to the border? Then we'll go photograph together!
DID YOU KNOW
The Kalmthoutse Heide is a 3-star Stiltegebied. This sounds almost like an assessment of a hotel yet it is not. Space for peace and quiet is threatened by a very dense road network, intensive air traffic, less favorable spatial planning, noisy recreation and industrialization. Various measurements are taken throughout all seasons. The heath scores three stars in several areas. Grenspark Kalmthoutse Heide may therefore call itself a three-star Stiltegebied because
- noise level is limited to 35 dB(A) on average,
- That area sounds are heard less than 20% of the time,
- That a maximum of only five area sounds can be heard within 15 minutes.
Reading this, it sounds like the perfect quiet environment for some hiking and photography. Will you gently sneak along to one of the quietest places in Flanders and the Netherlands?
